Super Sad Squad will be centered around Alex Huggins. She's a 17 year old senior in high school who is typically very reserved and soft spoken. She is targeted often by bullies but none more than her nemesis, Logan Gray. Whether in school or out, she can't seem to get away from Logan.
Alex's parents are rarely in the same room at the same time. Her father was discharged from the United States Army a few years back and has developed severe PTSD, which prevents him from maintaining steady employment outside of the military. Alex's mother works near constant hours at a nearby hospital just to make ends meet.
Alex spends most of her time poring over books, listening to music or just about anything that drowns out the world around her. She lives next door to Sam Gray, who is her best friend but, tragically, also related to Logan. Her and Sam share conversations through a broken panel in the privacy fence dividing their back yards. Sam always sticks up for Alex, especially when it comes to her brother; she never misses an opportunity to put him in his place. Alex is anxious to make good grades, pass all her classes and become eligible for a scholarship to college. She is obsessed with composition notebooks and is rarely caught without one. The contents of these notebooks are a complete mystery to even her closest friends.
Samantha Gray, who prefers to go by Sam, is Alex's best friend and next door neighbor. Sam is six months older than Alex and was therefor a grade ahead of her. Alex and Sam have been planning to go to college together since they were little girls so, since Sam has already graduated, she is taking a year off and saving money while she waits for Alex to finish school. Her goal is to get out of the small, backwards town that her and Alex had to grow up in.
Sam is the exact opposite of Alex; she is tough and maybe even a little mean. She stands up to anyone, especially those who pick on Alex. She has a masterful combination of wit and sarcasm that are threatening to those who would oppose her. She does not lose arguments.
Sam kicks ass. Plain and simple. She also practices kickboxing in her spare time and is skilled on a skateboard, using one to get around everywhere she goes. She works with Laura, who is one of the few people she seems to allow in her inner circle.
Logan is Sam's little brother and a typical school bully. His most frequent victim is Alex. He picks on her at school and pesters her at home every chance he gets. Unbeknownst to anyone is that his bullying stems from a secret crush he has on Alex. Logan has never gotten anything he didn't want. His two-faced persona and deceitfulness win over those who don't know any better, including his parents and school teachers. He has no respect for women and can't seem to grasp that some things don't belong to him.
Logan is infatuated with sports, videos games and energy drinks. He has an entourage of guys who follow him around because he has all the newest things, since his parents make sure he wants for nothing. Logan and his friends gang up on Alex and are a large source of her turmoil.
Logan is an angel in front of his parents and teachers but an absolute brute when an adult is no longer within earshot. He has no problem lying, stealing or cheating to get what he wants. He doesn't have solid plans for the future and just expects everything to continue being handed to him as it always has been.
Laura is vivacious, proud and open with every aspect of her life. Laura usually likes most everyone she meets right away although she knows a bad egg when she sees one. She has a big and oftentimes inappropriate sense of humor. She has no filter and delves into topics Sam and Alex usually try to avoid.
She is charismatic, outgoing and well liked by many but always makes time for Sam and Alex. She is very discerning and intuitive, knowing when and how she is needed by even her most reluctant of friends. With a gentle touch she has been slowly trying to pull Alex out of her shell. Her openness creates a safe haven where Alex can talk about things she typically wouldn't.
Laura has a weakness for fashion, music, shopping and desserts. She is fun loving and ensures that those around her cut loose as well.
Steven is a mountain of a man, but a gentle giant. Though intimidating at first glance, Steven is actually very polite and a downright genius. He works at a vintage music store that Sam and Alex frequent. He has minimal but meaningful dialogue with them. Him and Alex are fascinated with one another. He always stops whatever he is doing to give his full and undivided attention to her every time she stops in.
He has a lot in common with Alex, being very reserved and soft spoken, but he does not hesitate to speak his mind when the time is right. Steven is one of the few people other than Sam that Alex feels that she can talk to. She sees him as the big brother she never had.
Oliver Davis is going to be showing up later in the story. He's a well-mannered gentleman sporting a golden tan and a deep love for surfing. As the story progresses we will find him running into Sam and Alex. He and Sam hit it off real quick given their many mutual interests and the fact that she loves showing him up when it comes to skating. Despite how well he gets along with Sam, though, he tends to get a little flushed when he's around Alex.
